Simply Christian: Why Christianity Makes Sense

by N.T. Wright

Item Number: 1053

Book -- Why is justice fair? Why do we crave relationships? Why are so many people pursuing spirituality? For two thousand years Christianity has claimed to answer these mysteries, and in Simply Christian, renowned biblical scholar and Anglican bishop N. T. Wright demonstrates that it still does so today. Like C. S. Lewis in his classic Mere Christianity, Wright makes the case for Christian faith from the ground up, assuming that the reader has no predisposition to and perhaps even some negativity toward religion in general and Christianity in particular. Simply Christian serves as a straightforward introduction for those unfamiliar with the faith, and a source of thoughtful, accessible scholarship for everyone. N. T. Wright is Bishop of Durham for the Church of England. He is one of today's leading theologians and author of Jesus and the Victory of God, which is widely regarded as one of the most significant studies in the contemporary "Third Quest" of the historical Jesus. He taught New Testament studies for twenty years at Cambridge, McGill and Oxford Universities. Among his many published works are The Challenge of Jesus, The Meaning of Jesus (co-authored with Marcus Borg), and What Saint Paul Really Said.

Solving Marriage Problems

Jay E. Adams

Item Number: 1381

Book -- This is a book to help counselors understand and deal with the typical problems that arise in a marriage. The approach is to offer not merely solutions but biblical solutions. Chapter by chapter, each problem that is brought into focus is addressed by Scripture, and a solution arising from Scripture is developed. Unless one understands what a biblical marriage is supposed to be, it is difficult to solve marriage problems. For that reason Dr. Adams spends the first few chapters developing a biblical model. Then he treats many of the specific kinds of problems that typically arise: life patterns, priorities, children, sex roles, in-laws, etc.

Still Evangelical? Insiders Reconsider Political, Social, and Theological Meaning

by Mark Labberton

Item Number: 1367

Book -- Evangelicalism in America has cracked, split on the shoals of the 2016 presidential election and its aftermath, leaving many wondering if they want to be in or out of the evangelical tribe. The contentiousness brought to the fore surrounds what it means to affirm and demonstrate evangelical Christian faith amidst the messy and polarized realities gripping our country and world. Who or what is defining the evangelical social and political vision? Is it the gospel or is it culture? For a movement that has been about the primacy of Christian faith, this is a crisis. This collection of essays was gathered by Mark Labberton, president of Fuller Theological Seminary, who provides an introduction to the volume. What follows is a diverse and provocative set of perspectives and reflections from evangelical insiders who wrestle with their responses to the question of what it means to be evangelical in light of their convictions. Referring to oneself as evangelical cannot be merely a congratulatory self-description. It must instead be a commitment and aspiration guided by the grace and mercy of Jesus Christ. What now are Christ's followers called to do in response to this identity crisis?

Stop Asking Jesus Into Your Heart: The Teen Edition

by Jason Gaston and J.D. Greear

Item Number: 1144

Book -- Why is it so difficult to know that you are saved? The idea of "asking Jesus into your heart" or "giving your life to Jesus" often gives false assurance to those who are not saved--and keeps those who genuinely are saved from fully embracing that reality. Greear unpacks the doctrine of assurance and answers the tough questions: What exactly is faith? What is repentance? Why are there so many warnings that seem to imply we can lose our salvation? Such issues are handled with respect to the theological rigors they require, but Greear and Gaston are careful to present the material with a pastoral sensitivity and communication technique that makes this message teachable and applicable to teens.

Structured for Mission: Renewing the Culture of the Church

by Alan J. Roxburgh

Item Number: 1335

Book -- A call for the church to reimagine it's cultural structure The church is living in a time of massive, unprecedented change. Traditional institutions and structures are unraveling in response to rapid social, demographic and economic developments. The existing ways of being the church are no longer meaningful to many. How should the church respond? Many seek to address this situation by tweaking the established institutions, finding new structures, reorganizing congregations or renewing long-established practices. Some even argue that we need to abandon structures and institutions altogether. We regularly hear proposals for missional churches, organic churches, simple churches, fresh expressions churches and so on. Alan Roxburgh argues that we need to look deeper. Structures embody the core narratives that shape how people see the world. We cannot simply replace old institutions with new ones. We need to examine the underlying stories, metaphors and cultures that give organizations their meaningfulness. The crisis of the church today is a crisis not of institution but of imagination. In Structured for Mission, Roxburgh challenges the church to become a place where people are empowered to reimagine their religious life and experiment with new ways of being the church in a local context. We are living in a brave new world. Will the church be ready?
